In its lawsuit, filed in a New York state court Friday afternoon, Uber argues that the one-year freeze on ride-hail vehicle licenses is anticompetitive and exceeds the city’s authority.
But its many pages make clear that while the Silicon Valley hype around robocars may have cooled, progress toward the day when humans are unshackled from the steering wheel continues: The 48 autonomous vehicle developers that tested their tech on public roads collectively drove 2.05 million miles between December 2017 and November 2018, up from 500,000 the year before.
And indeed, the resolution’s transportation recommendations are sweeping: that the country invest seriously in zero-emission vehicle infrastructure and manufacturing, in “clean, affordable, and accessible” public transit, and in so much high-speed rail that air travel is no longer necessary.
(The researchers expect that come 2025, electrics will make up 15 percent of new car sales in California, 9 percent in those other states, and 1.4 percent everywhere else.) The report projects that Los Angeles will need 35,000 charging stations, about seven times the number it had in 2017.
Beyond a few demo rides, no company has been willing to take the human safety operator out of its cars, which is another way of saying that nobody has cracked the self-driving problem yet.
