Hello, and welcome once again to The Monitor , WIRED's roundup of all things pop culture. What's happening this Monday? Well, Dumbo had a kinda OK weekend at the box office. Also, Marvel has some new animated offerings on the way, and there's another weird comedy coming from Netflix. It's April Fool's Day, but none of these stories are jokes. Promise.
Shuri Gets a Show—Sorta
Over the weekend at the fan convention WonderCon, Marvel announced a handful of new chapters in its Marvel Rising animated series. Among them: Marvel Rising: Operation Shuri. The 22-minute special, which will stream on Marvel HQ, features the Princess of Wakanda learning how to be an average teenager from some of the Secret Warriors (Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, etc.). In other exciting news, Ironheart (aka Riri Williams) is also getting her own 44-minute special, which is scheduled to hit the YouTube channel this Wednesday.
Dumbo Flies, But Also Falters
As was semi-expected , Disney's latest reboot—Dumbo—didn't perform quite as well as some of the studio's previous live-action remakes. Yet it still pulled in a handsome $45 million domestically this past weekend, slightly short of the $50 million observers had thought it might collect. (It did a little better internationally, where the Tim Burton-directed movie brought in $71 million.) Those figures, unsurprisingly, don't add up to the massive opening-weekend hauls of other recent Disney redos like Beauty and the Beast ($174 million) and The Jungle Book ($103 million). On the plus side for the Mouse House, Captain Marvel has made almost $1 billion. So there's that.
Netflix's Comedy About Death Has a Trailer
Netflix's commitment to WTFTV continues in this new trailer for Dead to Me, comedy (we think?) about two women who meet in a support group for those grieving the loss of a loved one. Starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, it looks like a show with more twists than a Twizzler. (That's a saying, right?) The new series hits Netflix May 3.
