Our History A New Kind of Conservation Jenkins developed and continually refined a data driven approach to prioritize and protect the rarest locations of plants and animals and the best examples of natural communities.
Poloskey, an education and outreach coordinator for The Nature Conservancy in Texas , spent the summer collecting about 2,260 pine needles in the rugged yet fragile Davis Mountains of West Texas, fieldwork to help gain a better understanding of the genetics of ponderosa pines.
I recently had a chance to check in with two of the authors, Steve Wood and Jon Fisher, environmental scientists with The Nature Conservancy and The Pew Charitable Trusts, respectively, for a wide-ranging discussion on the challenges of turning science into practice and why their paper is more timely than ever – especially as scientists struggle to help inform meaningful change in a world facing increasingly urgent challenges.
© Ashok Biswal The Nature Conservancy in India has been engaging with the local communities and working closely with state government authorities since 2017 to undertake and facilitate cost-effective and pragmatic riparian restoration activities in the selected patches of Narmada riverbank.
As the authors note in the paper, “Only 0.2% of ingested eggs survived gut passage, yet, given the abundance, diet, and movements of ducks in nature, our results have major implications for biodiversity conservation and invasion dynamics in freshwater ecosystems.”.
© Manuel Morales Roman Like many of the places where The Nature Conservancy works, Chiapas, Mexico, is a biodiversity hotspot under threat: as the fertility of existing agricultural lands decreases, the agricultural sector expands into bordering forests.
“Even though this area is wild and undeveloped, we were seeing pro-longed growing season floods that hurt the floodplain vegetation, eroded river banks, and caused low dissolved oxygen levels that resulted in fish kills,” says Julie DeMeester, water program director for The Nature Conservancy in North Carolina .
In Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, The Nature Conservancy is taking action to adopt a new approach to prairie restoration to help native plants respond to changing conditions.
But there are also many new books that continue to tell nature, conservation and science stories in creative ways.I’m impressed by the different ways of telling the story, including a children’s adventure series, fun daily readings of nature facts, a literary novel and more.
“The Nature Conservancy needed a conservation solution that could tackle bycatch challenges while still providing economic opportunities for sustainable fishing in coastal fishing communities,” said Dr. Alexis Jackson, Fishery Project Director with TNC’s California Oceans Program.

11 December, Madrid - The German Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through its International Climate Initiative today announced it is providing €20 million for a new programme co-led by FAO and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to accelerate climate change action in developing countries' agricultural and land use sectors.
A new tool developed by The Nature Conservancy provides answers, using a research-based approach to help agencies, communities and other stakeholders obtain the information they need to prioritize floodplain protection and restoration.
Bigger Change Faster: Integrated Development, Health, and Environment Actions for a Sustainable Future is co-authored by the United Nations Development Programme and the Bridge Collaborative—a partnership led by The Nature Conservancy, PATH, the International Food Policy Research Institute, and Duke University.
Lozada, technology manager for The Nature Conservancy in Colorado , knows that many people that increasing drone use will only harass and terrify wild animals.Gustavo Lozada “Many people just want exciting video footage, and don’t think about how it may be affecting animals,” he says.
I’m in an airboat gliding across the glassy surface of The Nature Conservancy’s Emiquon Preserve , a restored floodplain wetland located along the Illinois River.
Understanding basic patterns in the biogeography of an urban area is the focus of a partnership between The Nature Conservancy and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
“I think the results of this paper really add an abundance of caution, that we shouldn't hope that species will adapt to changing climate and changing habitats, that we don't need to do anything,” says Mark Reynolds, lead scientist for the Nature Conservancy’s migratory bird program, who wasn’t involved in the study.
“You don't need to plant anything, you just stop whacking the system,” says Bronson Griscom, director of forest carbon science at the Nature Conservancy.
Photo © TNC For more than 30 years, The Nature Conservancy’s Phantom Canyon Preserve has sought balance between the needs of people and the needs of wildlife. Photo © TNC “The preserve is not open for six months of the year,” says Sally Ross, The Nature Conservancy in Colorado’s Laramie Hills program director.
“The people within MENAR are saltwater people, they rely heavily on the sea, to the point that if their fish stocks collapse it would be a catastrophe,” says Pete Waldie , a coastal fisheries scientist with The Nature Conservancy’s Melanesia program .
Now in its fifth year, the Conservancy’s NatureNet Science Fellows program is specifically designed to broaden conservation science and research in ways that tackle climate change — our world’s most pressing challenge — head on.
